Responsibilities may include preparing and cooking meals, looking after younger siblings, providing emotional support and taking care of medications or dressings. These are responsibilities not encountered by many of their peers. Yet, young people who help care for a relative or a friend tell us that caring can be a very positive experience. Sometimes though, when families aren’t well supported, young people can miss out on opportunities to go to school, do homework, spend time with friends, have a job or further their studies; they can experience high levels of stress and worry; they can feel confused and isolated.
There is an urgent need for a range of policies and programs to meet the needs of young carers and for an informed and coordinated approach by governments and the community. Young carers need to be supported in their caring roles so they can enjoy the same opportunities available to their peers in the wider community.
How you can help
The 2008 Young Carers Forum ‘Bring it’ will be held over two days at Parliament House, Canberra from 26-27 November this year. Show more about The Forum…
The Forum will provide an opportunity to examine the latest research and will feature a workshop involving representatives of various organisations that have an impact on young carers. The outcomes of the workshop will include high quality policy statements to inform young carer policy development. A delegation of young carers drawn from across Australia will be on hand to provide instant feedback. Leadership training to run during the Forum will build young carers’ capacity in terms of self-confidence, advocacy and mentoring.
